Roman medallions in Croatian museums

The exhibition displays the material from the numismatic collections of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments in Split and the Museum of Slavonia in Osijek. Exhibited are all known bronze and silver coin medallions, together with two chosen specimens of contorniates from Late Antiquity - altogether 18 items. By far the largest number of the displayed pieces comes from the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb. This is not surprising in the least, considering the fact that the Numismatic collection of this Museum ranks among the most important in Europe. Some of the exhibited medallions can be considered unique in the world terms, and the quality of their workmanship, their beauty and harmony, make these real masterpieces of the engraving art, with hardly a rival in the entire Classical numismatics. Although rather small in terms of the number of exhibits, the exhibition displays monuments of outstanding value, which count as the first-class and indispensable source for the research of the Roman history and religion.
