Subject: Krešimir Rončević was ever-present in Croatian archaeology for four decades through his field drawings, reconstructions of immobile finds in situ, ideal reconstructions of structures and settlements, as well as drawings of small finds. His drawing of the Apoxiomenos must be emphasized in this context. His artistic sensibility and, in the first place, sensitivity to the use of colour, characteristic for him as a painter, had to be austerely controlled, even though these reconstructions were his favourite.
This exhibition presents his archaeological paintings and drawings, although his work was much wider in scope. His themes encompassed painting of interiors, sacral motifs, painting and sculpture ateliers, worktables etc. He is inclined towards intimate realism with a strong component of surrealism, while, in terms of colour, he practices tonal painting.
