28 May 2020 free admission The Italian participation in the Festival of EU Archaeology will be represented by the Municipality of Trieste, and, in particular, by the “J. J. Winckelmann” Museum of Antiquity. The focus of the event will be on the figure of Carlo Marchesetti (Trieste, 1850–1926), an archaeologist, paleontologist and botanist, who started the first investigations into the prehistoric and protohistoric period developed on the territory between the Venezia Giulia region and the Istrian peninsula. In particular, the excavation campaigns superintended by him at the end of the 19th century brought to light ancient fortified settlements, called "castellieri", that were inhabited by ancient pre-Roman peoples. The event will be divided into two phases, and will take place at Archaeological Museum in Zagreb. The first phase will see the organization of a workshop on the figure of Marchesetti and the castellieri at AMZ’s conference hall. A photographic exhibition on the main findings from Marchesetti’s excavations, currently kept at the "J. J. Winckelmann" Museum of Antiquity, will be opened soon after in the AMZ’s lapidarium.
