Mala od Caske 3 September - 7 November 2026 Gallery AMZ The opening of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, 3 September 2026, starting at 12 PM (noon)
The exhibition Mala od Caske by Ivan Čondić, senior documentarian of the Archaeological Museum Zadar, presents us the story of excavations around the church of St. George in Caska near Novalja on the island of Pag and a precious discovery made there; the burial of a girl with a necklace that has not been found in any old Croatian grave yet. The comic book Mala od Cask" was created during about four years and consists of three parts. In the first two, designed in the form of a comic in black and white in pencil and ink technique, the author presents the fieldwork at the time of the discovery of the Grave 7 with the burial of a little girl, and then through four short stories he peeks into that cut too short childhood with small fragments of children's everyday life imaginable at any historical period. The third part of the book consists of texts, photographs and drawings from the excavations. The exhibition presents 32 original comic book panels, cover pages in pencil and watercolour technique, and 4 sketches, like that visitors can learn more about the making of this publication and gain a deeper insight into the creative process behind it. Also, the showcase will display archaeological material found in the Grave 7 - gilded necklace, earrings, and one ring. Alongside the exhibition Mala od Caske, replicas based on jewellery found in Caska and two richly decorated reliquaries found in Novalja will be displayed. The unique replicas of ancient Croatian jewellery and reliquaries were made by the company ZAKS, a well-known manufacturer of Croatian traditional jewellery. Along the replicas, photographs of them will be also exhibited, the work of Novalja’s photographer Eugen Rebernišak. |
