HIDDEN HISTORIA - the First Women of Zagreb Museums
HIDDEN HISTORIA - the First Women of Zagreb Museums 6 March – 13 July 2025 The exhibition HIDDEN HISTORIA - the First Women of Zagreb Museums is a collaborative project by four major Zagreb museums: the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, the Ethnographic Museum, the Croatian School Museum, and the Museum of Arts and Crafts. It focuses on the stories of the first women in Zagreb’s cultural institutions—curators, scientist, painters, sculptors, poets, designers —highlighting their contributions and the challenges they faced in the first half of the 20th century. In a society marked by gender inequality, their work was often undervalued, and their intellectual and professional abilities were questioned. Despite this, through dedication and perseverance, they significantly contributed to museum development, though their efforts were frequently forgotten. The exhibition HIDDEN HISTORIA - the First Women of Zagreb Museums showcases figures such as Tereza Paulić, Zdenka Sertić, and Zlata Šufflay, placing them within the broader context of emancipatory processes that allowed women greater visibility on the cultural scene. Special attention is given to women who faced prejudice in traditionally male-dominated scientific fields, such as Dora Pfanova and Roksana Zurunić Cuvaj, who publicly advocated for women’s rights and pointed out social injustices. The accompanying program includes public discussions, roundtables, and lectures addressing contemporary challenges women face in various roles. Participation in the 2025 Festival of Lights will feature a film divided into four segments, portraying the lives and careers of the first women in Zagreb’s museums. |
