Ozren Domiter (The Archaeological Museum in Zagreb), Hrvoje Vulić (Vinkovci Municipal Museum): Tracing the Danubian Horsemen in Southern Pannonia: Illustrating, Counting, Mapping

The cult of the Danubian Horsemen represents a phenomenon of religious fusion, attested primarily on stone and lead artefacts distributed along the Danubian limes during the 3rd c. and the first half of the 4th c. While stone reliefs are more common in provinces such as Dacia or Moesia, the Pannonian frontier is distinguished by a dense concentration of lead plaques appearing in a wide variety of shapes and iconographic themes.

Recent research and syntheses of the corpora have been marked by a significant increase in newly discovered lead plaques, particularly in the region of Lower Pannonia. The aim of this paper is to present a brief introduction to the cult itself with its dominant research problems, highlighting the spatial distribution of the expanding corpora. The growing number of finds and need for methodology required for their proper documentation will be specially emphasized.

Aleksandra Nikoloska (Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts): The Lost Statuary group of the Goddess between Dioskouroi from Demir Kapija

Among the opulent art legacy inspired by the Dioskouroi, there is one particular type of monuments – votive reliefs with a representation of a triad composed out of the divine twins flanking a central goddess. While this iconographic motif is notably absent from sculptures in the round, it is well attested in reliefs and sepulchral art. However, there is a record of a now-lost statuary group discovered in Demir Kapija—ancient Stenae—in the Roman province of Macedonia, a site where other findings suggest the existence of a temple dedicated to these deities. This study revisits this forgotten monument, aiming to shed new light on its significance and to explore the iconography more deeply, known on stone votive reliefs from the greater region and, more prominently, central on the so-called votive plaques of the Danubian riders.

Nirvana Silnović (Austrian Archaeological Institute, Austrian Academy of Sciences): The Global, the Local, and the In-Between: The Cult of Mithras in the Roman Province of Dalmatia

This presentation introduces a new research project (APART-GSK Excellence Fellowship, Austrian Archaeological Institute, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna) dedicated to the material evidence of the Mithras cult in the Roman province of Dalmatia. Emerging around the mid-second century AD, the cult spread rapidly across the province, from the highly urbanized Adriatic coast to the rugged mountainous hinterland. By its decline in the late fourth and early fifth centuries AD, it had left behind an exceptionally rich archaeological record.

The project will systematically document this archaeological corpus and provide a comprehensive analysis of the material set against the broader socio-cultural and historical background of the region. In addition, it will explore the potential of theoretical frameworks such as lived ancient religion and glocalization for understanding individual strategies of appropriation and forms of religious communication in the region. Ultimately, the project seeks to deepen our knowledge of how the global cult of Mithras was experienced locally, and to uncover the distinct meanings that were thus created.
